Some Guidelines For Proper Care of Your Cat's Fur

You wouldn't think that a cat needs any help in taking care of its fur coat as they spend lots of time cleaning themselves everyday. They do a decent job on their own (certainly better than dogs) but your cat can always use some help from you to keep its coat in a healthy condition.

The main thing you can do is make sure to brush your cat every day, especially if it's a long haired breed. If your cat hasn't been brushed before, it could take a few times to get used to the idea, but a lot of times cats end up enjoying the process, and this could prove to be some nice bonding time for you and your pet. You will be helping your cat to avoid so many hairballs by removing all the hair that they would normally ingest while cleaning themselves.

Besides removing loose hair, brushing your cat can also clear any dandruff, which is actually a pretty common problem with cats. This also helps to untangle any matted hair, plus it helps with circulation and muscle tone

You should use both a brush and a comb for grooming your cat. A course brush will help remove all the loose hair and particles, while the comb will help with untangling and smooth out its coat. Sometimes hair can get matted up so much that it can't be combed out, in which case you might need to resort to snipping the knots out with scissors. Always make sure your cat is in a relaxed mood however when you do this. If your cat is nervous and struggles, you don't want to cut your cat (or yourself) with the scissors.
