How to Make a Cheap Rope Dog Toy Using the Monkey Fist Knot

If you've got some old rope, two hands and a little patience you CAN make this rope toy for your dog! Once you have mastered tying the knots, you can make a toy like this is under 15 minutes. These toys would make great fundraisers for any dog event!

Tools & Supplies

You only need a few things to make this toy, 20 feet of rope, a pair of scissors and a lighter.

Making the Monkey Fist Knot

STEP 1 - Starting in the middle of the rope, wrap it around your hand three times.

STEP 2 - Wrap the rope three times around the middle of the outside of the rope.

STEP 3 - Wrap the rope three times around the "core" of the rope.

STEP 4 - Tightening the knot is the hardest part, and you probably won't get it right on the first try. Tighten up the knot like you are trying to undo it. Work slowly and keep at it.

Making The Chain Sennit Ends

Now you have to finish the loose ends of the rope

STEP 1 - Make a loop in the rope.

STEP 2 - Make another loop in the rope and push it through. Tighten the previous knot

STEP 3 - Keep going until you have reached near the end of your rope.

STEP 4 - Push your working end of rope through the last loop and tighten to end the chain.

Repeat these steps with the other end of the rope.

Finishing The Rope Ends

Trim the ends of the rope with a scissor so that they are even and melt the ends with a lighter so that they don't unravel.

Your dog toy is now finished! With all dog toys, please supervise playtime with this toy for safety reasons.
