Women's Silk Scarves - If They're Good Enough For Royalty, They're Good Enough For You!

Over the years, millions of women around the world have fallen for the appeal of luxurious and elegant silk scarves, and not least the rich and famous. Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn and Greta Garbo have all taken their turns at making these gorgeous accessories all the more desirable to the average woman, but royalty too have played their part in increasing their popularity.

Princess Grace of Monaco, formerly iconic actress Grace Kelly and surely one of the most beautiful women to have graced the silver screen, was rarely seen without a stunning scarf wrapped around her hair, no mattered whether her image was captured on a yacht, in a car or on the street. Her look was one which was admired and emulated by fashionable women from around the globe.

Past and present members of the British royal family too have been huge fans of the silk scarf. The Queen Mother, Queen consort of King George VI, was frequently seen sporting some fine examples, particularly when she was relaxing and taking part in long country walks and enjoying sporting events. To this day, her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, carries on the tradition and has been photographed in everything from the more traditional square scarf tied around her hair and under her chin, to a long, flowing one which she wore as a mark of respect when visiting a mosque during a trip to Turkey, an occasion which saw her nicknamed 'the Queen of scarves' by one of the British newspapers. Like her mother, she clearly found them a particularly useful accessory when out walking the dogs at Balmoral.

Princess Anne, the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, must surely have picked up some of her fashion sense from her mother and grand-mother and is probably most famous of all for her penchant for wearing head scarves.

Perhaps the member of the British royal family who did most for the reputation of the silk scarf, however, is the late Princess Diana, whose beauty and gentleness captivated the world and whose tragic death shocked them to the core. In her travels around the world, as well as in her own country, she was frequently seen wearing scarves of all descriptions, from smaller examples worn in a simple knot around her neck, to long, elegant scarves which were sometimes worn in the style of Grace Kelly.

Even Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, formerly Camilla Parker Bowles and now Prince Charles' second wife, has joined the ranks of women scarf-wearers. In a visit to Kuwait in 2007, she was photographed with her head covered by a scarf in a pose which was described as being 'eerily reminiscent of Princess Diana' who had also visited the city 18 years previously.

While these rich and royal ladies may have set or continued the trend for wearing beautiful silk scarves though, these gorgeous accessories are, thankfully, within the reach of us mere mortals. For much less than most people would ever imagine, ladies everywhere can look like royalty in a stunning hand painted silk scarf, and without breaking the bank.
